RTP at low latitudes

Is there any way to correct, or minimise, the low latitude N-S "smearing" of RTP data?

No. That's inherent to the RTP transform. There are techniques to reduce a bit that effect but I was not enough motivated to invest in that. Ultimately the problem is that one can not divide by sin(lat) when lat goes to zero.
