estimating coordinates (latitude + longitude) of a plane at a given depth

Added by Januka 6 days ago

Hi,
If I know the coordinates (lats + lons) of a fault trace at the surface, its strike, and dip, is it possible to estimate the coordinates of the trace intersecting a user-defined depth (e.g. 10 km, and assume topography = 0)? If so, how would you do it in GMT? Basically, I am trying to estimate coordinates of a fault plane at depth. Also, where can I find the equations used in GMT code for this purpose? Thank you!

No such thing built in but you can probably roll your own with gmtmath. You would have to work out some algebra for solving for what you want.
