For example:

for ((i=0;i<10;++i)); do echo $i; done | gmt sample1d -I2 -S2/4

for ((i=10;i>0;--i)); do echo $i; done | gmt sample1d -I2 -S2/4

Same order as input (as is without the -S option).

Should be working as expected now, give it a try; in r13476. If happy I will back port to GMT 4.
